Today students began a unit on perspective and landscape. As a class, we discussed foreground, middle ground, and background in landscape paintings. Then students used the SMARTboard to work together to create a scene that had a foreground, middle ground, and background by creating a scale in their images. Next, students sketched out their ideas for a landscape drawing where they will utilize perspective and create a scale in their work.

Students completed their assemblages by building upon the previous layers that they created. Using glue and found objects, each student created a unique assemblage sculpture that will be assembled and spray painted to create a collaborative assemblage piece.

Today students began a new unit on assemblage. An assemblage is a layered 3-D sculpture using found or recycled objects. Students looked at work from Louise Nevelson specifically her work with assemblages.

As a class, we looked at found object sculptures. Using the SMART board, students came up and circled everyday materials that they could find in the found sculptures. This led to a class discussion about giving a "new life" to an objects be re-purposing it.

For the past week, the entire school has been helping out class collect "found objects", and our collection ranged from old keys to Christmas ornaments. As a class we discussed the process of sorting and categorization. Then, students worked  together to sort our found objects into categories.

Students completed their Picasso head project and their pieces went into the kiln this morning, so today we worked on finishing glazing their tiles. At Wesley, each student creates a unique tile each year and they are added to a school-wide collaborative project. Students finished their tiles and they will be fired in the kiln sometime next week!

For the past week, students have been creating their clay Picasso portraits using the elements of Cubism. Students first created one clay portrait using their own interpretation of Cubism. On Monday, students played a game to create another Picasso portrait. Each student chose a paper slip for each facial feature for their face from a jar at random. Then, students had to create facial features according to the shapes they chose from the jars.

After students created all their facial features, they chose a face shape and attaching their facial features in a Cubist style using a score and slip method.

Continuing with the cubism lesson, students recalled Pablo Picasso and his work with portraiture. As a class, we used the SMART board to create a collaborative cubist portrait in Picasso's style, using Picassohead.com

Then, students looked at examples of Picasso's portraits and identified geometric shapes within the work using the SMART boards.

Using Picasso's work as inspiration, students began to sketch out their own Cubist portraits using geometric shapes.
